Professional Background
I bridge the gap between frontline clinical practice and high-level academic strategy. My perspective is shaped by nearly two decades of operational experience in an Australian jurisdictional ambulance service, including advanced practice roles as an Intensive Care Paramedic and Extended Care Paramedic. That experience continues to inform how I approach curriculum design, workforce development, and clinical governance.
In higher education, I have held leadership roles including Discipline Lead for Paramedicine and First Year Experience Lead, with a strong focus on program quality, student success, and the future direction of the profession. My doctoral research examined how qualified paramedics transition into specialist community paramedicine roles, an area of workforce development I continue to support through research, consultancy, and sector engagement.
Today, my work sits at the intersection of education, regulation, and professional practice. Through David N Long Consulting Pty Ltd, I provide independent higher education consultancy, clinical education services, and expert clinical case review for universities, paramedic services, and regulatory bodies. I also remain actively embedded in the profession through tribunal panel work and academic appointments.
My credentials include a PhD in paramedicine workforce development, a Master of Education in Leadership and Management, and recognition as a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and Fellow of the Australasian College of Paramedicine.
